Celebrating the life of
H. Robert Powell
July 01, 1926 - March 19, 2016
H. Robert Powell died peacefully at home on March 19, 2016 where his family was able to share stories and find a time to say goodbye. Bob graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a PhD in Economics from the University of Illinois, after serving in the US Army during WWII. Bob retired from the AON Corporation, Chicago, Illinois in 1990 as the Chief Investment Officer; he was also a member of the Chartered Financial Analysts Society.
He and his first wife, Priscilla Alden Gates (Perky) moved to Savannah, Georgia to enjoy their retirement which included boating, music, and traveling. Bob was also an avid golfer. Bob and Perky loved dogs, and were among the initial supporters of the Dog Park at The Landings. They were fortunate to have met many wonderful friends here in Savannah.
Through mutual friends and a shared love of dogs, Bob met Margaret Martin McCardell (Peg) at the Dog Park. In 2008 they had both lost their spouses to whom they had been married 60 years. Bob and Peg married in February, 2011 in Las Vegas, NV, and enjoyed spending their summers in Casper, Wyoming and Bayfield, Ontario Canada.
Bob was a stellar dad and grandfather. After his marriage to Peg, he was quickly embraced by the McCardells and became a 2nd treasured father and grandfather to his step family.
Because of his integrity, kindness, generosity, intelligence, humor, positive spirit and innate sense of adventure, Bob will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and colleagues. Bob was supportive of many organizations, including the Savannah Philharmonic, the University of Illinois and Veteran’s organizations.
Bob is survived by his wife, Peg McCardell-Powell, and his step children: Sandra McCardell, Laurie McCardell, Clay McCardell and five step grandchildren. He is survived by his and Perky’s children: a daughter Maili Powell, son Andrew Dean Powell, daughter-in-law Johannah Powell, and grandsons Steven Powell and Harrison Powell.
Friends are invited by the family on Wednesday, March 23, 2016 between 5:00 and 7:00 pm to a gathering in the Azalea Room at the Plantation Club, The Landings, to celebrate a special life.
